Cruise Muses on Life, Work (E!)
by Sarah Hall

She may not have had a chance to showcase her comedic side on Dawson’s Creek, but in real life, Katie Holmes is apparently a laugh riot.
“She’s very funny, a great comedian,” proud husband Tom Cruise said of his wife of almost a year in an interview with Entertainment Tonight slated to air Thursday.
With his first anniversary fast approaching, Cruise said married life was “all very good, all very lovely,” and that he feels “lucky” to be wedded to Holmes, his third wife.
“I have a lot of respect for her as an artist, as a woman,” he said. “She’s a very strong, gracious woman.” Read more
Johnny Depp: Daughter’s Illness Was ‘Darkest Moment’
By Kate Stroup

Johnny Depp is still keeping mum about the undisclosed illness which landed his 8-year-old daughter, Lilly Rose, in the hospital this spring – but he is opening up about his paternal panic during those harrowing days.
“To say it was the darkest moment, that’s nothing,” the 44-year-old actor, next up in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, tells Entertainment Weekly. “It doesn’t come close to describing it. Words are so small.”
“Now every single millisecond is a mini-celebration,” says the two-time Oscar nominee. “Every time we get to breathe in and exhale is a huge victory. She pulled through beautifully, perfectly, with no lasting anything.”
The Pirates of the Caribbean star also has a son, Jack, 5, with longtime partner Vanessa Paradis.

Amy Winehouse Surfaces, Avril Lavigne Wins at MTV Europe Awards (people)
By Monique Jessen

Avril Lavigne rocked the MTV Europe Music Awards in Munich Thursday night, winning two of the show’s top prizes – while troubled singer Amy Winehouse surfaced for the event and offered a quiet “thanks.”
Lavigne picked up the Most Addictive Track trophy for “Girlfriend,” as well as the Solo Artist of 2007 award – to which the 23-year-old screamed with delight to the packed auditorium: “I am so happy, this is an honor!”
Winehouse won the Artists’ Choice award, the only honor decided by fellow musicians. The singer, who’s appealing her recent pot charge, sheepishly accepted her award with a quiet “thanks” before walking off stage.
Later in the evening Winehouse sang her classic “Back to Black,” but audience members noted the soul diva’s lack of energy. Read more
Over Before It Began (PerezHilton)

South Carolina Democratic officials have denied Stephan Colbert’s bid to get on the ballot in his home state as a Democrat.
The Comedy Central funnyman, who plays a conservative on his show, filed out an application and paid the $2,500 filing fee on Thursday.
Forty minutes later, top party officials declined his application, saying, “He’s really trying to use South Carolina Democrats as suckers so he can further a comedy routine.” And Colbert “serves to detract from the serious candidates on the ballot.”
If Stephen really wants to run in SC, he can pony up $35,000 to get on the Republican ballot.
Do it. Don’t be a cheapo!

By Jeffrey Slonim and Stephen M. Silverman
Like most little girls, Brooke Shields’s 4-year-old daughter, Rowan Henchy, “is obsessed with Hannah Montana,” her mom tells PEOPLE.
The difference is, the tot actually got to rub shoulders with Miley Cyrus, who plays the Disney Channel heroine – because Shields guest-starred on an episode in which she plays the title character’s deceased mom, who comes back from the dead to comfort Miley/Hannah.
Rowan, whose dad is Shields’s husband, TV writer-producer Chris Henchy, “was so excited she got to go to a taping of it,” Shields, 42, said at a dinner hosted by Julianne Moore and Coach leather goods president Reed Krakoff for artist Hunt Slonem and his book Pleasure Palaces. Read more
